It's one of those movies you can just keep on all day and still be entertained by seeing bits and pieces of it.
Really a great movie. It's no wonder it got mass critical and commercial success.
Everything about this movie deserves the highest of praise. Being a consummate movie lover AND a fan of Tolkien's work, I truly believe this picture could not have been made better. It has a lyrical quality to it that surpasses most other fantasy films and is easily the most enchanting movie I've seen.
I just saw it for the third time and it was still every bit as captivating, from the poetic black-screen opening to the open-ended finale, setting up the next picture. This film has so much to teach us about ourselves and yet can simply be enjoyed for it's own sake as a well made piece of art.
Indeed, all the choices that director Peter Jackson had to contend with and the pressures that he was under to be true to the story give me a greater respect and appreciation for the filmmaking process and especially his masterful interpretation of the story, which so closely hit the mark for me it was uncanny.
The acting was magnificent, the musical score perfect, the choice of dialogue most appropriate, the cinematography one who has seen many, many movies, I recommend this above all others.

It is possible to shorten the story and make it an excellent movie. Peter Jackson had a chance but just missed!
The movie could not take me, why not? I think its because of some choices of PJ. Making a movie of this book, the first you have to ask yourself is: what feeling does the book give me and how do I bring this in the movie!
This first part of the complete story in the book gives introduction to various characters and takes care that you will love the characters. Also the story let you feel that the trip Frodo is making is long and hard. Third, you're going to love Middle-Earth and don' t want it to be destroyed.
In stead of these goals Peter Jackson focus is on battle and escapes. He gives you nice landscapes and pictures but wasted a lot of movietime with battles in stead of subtle tense.
I believe that in the next parts the movie will be better because Peter Jackson is more a person who would have liked these parts with lots of fights.
Overall, 8/10.
This is one of the few movies in which the script takes few liberties and remains acceptably "true" to the original story. It is also one of the few movies that gets better with each viewing. I'm so glad that Peter Jackson et al. were fans of the book and it was they that took on this project! It's going to be a long two year wait for the next two installments.
